PEKNY PARK

Located within Riverdale, Illinois, Pekny Park is downstream of a 31-acre watershed and has the lowest elevation in Cook County. This causes frequent flooding incidences in the streets and residential properties including basements. Working with the Center for Neighborhood Technology (CNT), this project realized recommendations from CNT’s RainReady Calumet Corridor study. TERRA’s multi-disciplinary team of water resource engineers and landscape architects designed and implemented green stormwater infrastructure facilities at the park to not only reduce the local flooding issues but also to provide gathering spaces and public amenities for the neighborhood. The scope included public engagement with Riverdale and its stakeholders for valuable input. The landscape design included nature play areas, boulders, a dry river stream, mounding topography, seating, and a simplified plant palette to aid in future park maintenance.
