UCHICAGO BOTANY POND RESTORATION

Working in the historical quad of UChicago, the multiple-phase scope involves the assessment of the failing existing pond and a redesign to ensure a healthy future. The pond was part of Olmsted’s original master plan for UChicago and has a rich history within the campus. With lush and mature planting, a limestone pedestrian bridge, and abundant wildlife, Botany Pond has become one of the most recognizable and cherished destinations on campus. Recent challenges include sedimentation, poor water quality, and leaks which necessitated intervention to ensure the pond continues to serve the campus. TERRA Landscape Architecture design renovations include repairing damages to the existing concrete wall and limestone bridge, installation of a sustainable filtration system with wetlands, new coping, planting design, and new ADA-compliant seating areas around the pond.
